ATTENTION INVESTORS
Important information and guidelines for investors participating in the securities market.
- KYC is a one-time exercise while dealing in securities markets. Once KYC is completed through a SEBI-registered intermediary (broker, DP, Mutual Fund, etc.), you need not undergo the same process again when approaching another intermediary.
- Prevent unauthorized transactions in your Demat and/or Trading account. Update your mobile number with your Depository Participant and Stock Brokers. Receive alerts on your registered mobile number/email ID for all debit and other important transactions directly from CDSL/Exchanges at the end of the day.
- There is no need for investors to issue cheques while subscribing to an IPO. Simply write your bank account number and sign the application form to authorize your bank to make payment in case of allotment. There is no need to worry about refunds, as the money remains in the investor's account.
- Investors should be cautious about unsolicited emails and SMS messages advising them to buy, sell, or hold securities. Trade only on the basis of informed decisions and invest after conducting appropriate analysis of the respective companies. Do not blindly follow unfounded rumours or tips. Investors are also encouraged to share knowledge or evidence of systemic wrongdoing, potential fraud, or unethical behaviour through the anonymous portal facilities provided on the BSE and NSE websites.
- Please update your six KYC attributes: Name, Address, PAN (linked with Aadhaar), Valid Mobile Number, Valid Email ID, and Income Range. Failure to update these details may result in your Demat and/or Trading accounts being frozen for debits.
- Investors may refer to the Exchanges' Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQs) and applicable guidelines.

- BSE Notice 20200831-45 dated August 31, 2020.
- Check your Securities, Mutual Funds, and Bonds in the consolidated account statement issued by NSDL/CDSL every month.
- When purchasing Rights Entitlements (RE), please note that purchasing RE does not automatically result in the credit of Rights Equity Shares to your Demat account. You must apply for the Rights Equity Shares separately to receive the shares.
- Beware of fixed, guaranteed, or regular returns and capital protection schemes. Brokers, their authorized persons, or associates are not authorized to offer fixed/guaranteed returns or capital protection on investments. They are also not authorized to enter into loan agreements with investors for payment of interest on funds provided. In case of default by a member, claims relating to funds or securities provided under arrangements promising indicative returns will not be accepted by the relevant Exchange Committee as per approved norms.
- Do not keep funds idle with your Stock Broker. Your broker must return the credit balance lying with them within three working days if you have not undertaken any transaction during the previous 30 calendar days. In case of member default, claims relating to funds and securities without transactions on the Exchange may not be accepted by the relevant Exchange Committee as per approved norms.
- Check the frequency of account settlement selected. If you have opted for a running account, ensure that your broker settles the account at least once every 90 days, or every 30 days if you selected the 30-day settlement option. In the event that a trading member is declared a defaulter, client claims are subject to the eligibility norms for compensation from the Investor Protection Fund (IPF). These norms are available on the NSE website: NSE - Defaulter Section
- Brokers are not permitted to accept transfers of securities as margin. Securities offered as margin or collateral must remain in the client's account. They may be pledged to the broker only through the margin pledge mechanism created within the Depository system. Clients must not place securities with the broker, an associate, or an authorized person for any reason. Brokers may receive client securities only for settlement of securities sold by the client.
- Always keep your mobile number and email address updated with your Stock Broker. Both details are mandatory and must be provided for updating Exchange records. If you are not receiving regular messages from the Exchanges or Depositories, immediately raise the matter with your Stock Broker or Exchange.
- Do not ignore emails or SMS messages received from the Exchange regarding trades executed in your account. Verify these messages against contract notes and account statements received from your broker. Report discrepancies to your broker immediately in writing. If your broker does not respond, escalate the matter to the Exchange or Depositories.
- Check weekly messages sent by Exchanges regarding funds and securities balances reported by the trading member. Compare these details with the weekly statement of account sent by your broker. Immediately raise a concern with the Exchange if you notice any discrepancy.
- Do not transfer funds for trading purposes to anyone other than a SEBI-registered Stock Broker. This includes authorized persons or associates of the broker. Investors should transfer trading funds only to the appropriate account of the registered Stock Broker.
